WaterAid is hosting a comedy gala on Wednesday 18 November, the eve of World Toilet Day, at Shebeen, Manchester Lane in Melbourne’s CBD. The gala featuring some of Australia’s best loved comedians will raise awareness about the lack of sanitation worldwide, as It’s no joke! 2.3 billion people around the world don’t have access to a safe toilet. The stellar lineup for the night includes: Dave Thornton, Tommy Little, Fiona O’Loughlin, Dave O’Neil, Randy and Lawrence Mooney. World Toilet Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2013 as a day to raise awareness of the importance of sanitation. “In Australia having a day all about toilets may seem funny. But for millions of people around the world it's no laughing matter. A shocking one in three of the world’s population do not have access to a safe and private toilet,” said Mr Paul Nichols, WaterAid Australia Chief Executive. “Many people have no choice but to face the indignity of going to the loo in the open, where they are exposed to disease and vulnerable to harassment and even attack. It's a serious issue that can be hard to talk about – so we want to overcome our embarrassment and get the nation talking about toilets,” said Mr Nichols. In the lead up to World Toilet Day, let’s overcome our embarrassment and use comedy to get the nation talking about toilets. Book your tickets now to give your support to the 1,400 children who die daily from diarrhoea cause by unsafe water and poor sanitation.
