WaterAid is improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene for communities in Malawi, Tanzania and Ghana through the Australia Africa Community Engagement Scheme (AACES).

AACES is a partnership of the Australian Government, ten Australian NGOs and their Africa based partners. Through this program WaterAid is improving water, sanitation and hygiene services for people like Mackson Jossam. His new latrine is fitted with a pedestal and modern sitting pan, as well as a ramp, spacious entrance and room for easy use with his wheelchair: “I am healthy. I have regained my dignity because I use my toilet with all the privacy that I need.”

In the latest AACES Annual Report, Elly Barrett, Program Manager and Chairperson of the AACES Steering Committee writes, “With the AACES partnership program focused on reaching the most marginalised people in Africa, it is vital that people with a disability, who are typically among the very poorest and most excluded, are considered and included in our program work. This year’s AACES annual report highlights the progress that has been made in year 2 of the program overall, with a special focus on how AACES partners have addressed disability inclusion.”
