WaterAid in Malawi presentations

21 Oct 2013 | AU

WaterAid is hosting a series of presentations around Australia by WaterAid’s Country Representative in Malawi, Mercy Masoo.

Learn about the water and sanitation crisis in this small country known as ‘the warm heart of Africa’, and the work WaterAid and local partners are doing to improve the situation and people’s lives.

In Malawi 2.4 million people live without safe water and over 7 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation. As a result over 3,000 children die every year from diarrhoea. HIV/AIDS is also widespread, leaving children orphaned and having to collect water for themselves and relatives.

With many years' experience in international development and as a water engineer, Mercy has inspiring tales to tell about her work in Africa.

“2.5 billion people around the world live without access to a toilet and 768 million people rely on unclean water. The absence of these basic services kills millions and costs billions. Over 2000 children a day die from diarrhoea which can be caused by lack of sanitation and clean water. Tragically people are contracting and dying of preventable diseases. We can only end poverty if an ambitious goal is set for everyone everywhere to enjoy the human right to water and sanitation by 2030,” said WaterAid Australia Chief Executive Mr Adam Laidlaw.
