We are an international non governmental organisation with a mission to transform lives by improving access to safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. We work with partners and influence decision-makers to maximise our impact.

WaterAid Japan is a Japanese registered non-profit organisation that with the aim to make a significant contribution to the achievement of our mission and the fulfilment of our vision.

The crisis

Water and sanitation underpin health, education and livelihoods. These basic human rights are the building blocks of a better world.

Without safe water or sanitation, people are trapped in a cycle of poverty and disease. Across the developing world, millions of women are wasting precious time collecting dirty water, children are dying from preventable diarrhoeal diseases, and communities have open sewers running through them.

Nobody should live like this. Our vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation.

Our approach

We work with local partners who understand local issues, providing them with the skills and support they need to help communities set up practical and sustainable projects. Technologies are used that fit the local context and people are trained to maintain them.

We cannot solve the water and sanitation crisis on our own. So we use our experience and research to influence governments and other service providers to do more.

The incredible generosity and commitment of all our supporters – individuals, institutions and companies – is behind everything we do.

Our work in Japan

WaterAid's history stretches back to 1981 when it was officially established as a charitable trust. Originally formed by staff from the UK water industry, we retain strong links to our water industry roots. We also have over 220,000 individual supporters as well as strong partnerships with many corporations, foundations and governments.

We have grown from strength to strength ever since to become one of the world's most respected international organisations dealing solely with water, sanitation and hygiene.

We use practical solutions to provide clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people.

We now work in 27 countries worldwide.
