844 million people in the world – one in nine – do not have clean water close to home.

2.3 billion people in the world – almost one in three – do not have a decent toilet of their own.

289,000 children under 5 die each year due to diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s 800 a day, or 1 child every 2 minutes.

WaterAid first started working in West Africa in 1985. We now operate across seven countries in West Africa: Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

In May 2012, we opened our West Africa regional office in Dakar, Senegal. The team works to strengthen WaterAid’s impact and visibility at the regional level through building relationships with local governments and advocacy and development partners.

The office is also responsible for providing support, advice and guidance for all country programmes in the region.
