This year WaterAid Australia will be extending its schools programme in Papua New Guinea to ensure that even those living in the remotest regions can enjoy the benefits of clean water and sanitation.
WaterAid has been supporting ATprojects, a local non governmental organisation, through its partnership with Oxfam New Zealand for three years with projects that have reached over 14,750 students.
In many instances remote, difficult to access villages have been neglected due to the logistical difficulties and additional costs.
This year, however, we will build latrines and provide access to safe clean water to an additional five schools, three of which are in very remote and poor areas of the district. These remote areas pose numerous challenges for the implementation of projects. Some equipment and materials such as plastic tanks will have to be flown in by helicopter.
WaterAid Australia will also support ongoing refresher training for an additional 80 schools on the importance of hygiene education.
