WaterAid on Google Earth awareness layer

10 April 2008

WaterAid is working with Google Earth on an exciting new programme that allows people to view its project work on the ground.

WaterAid's Global Awareness layer is easily accessible on Google Earth and allows millions of people, including fundraisers, donors, policy makers and governments to read about water and sanitation issues in the countries where WaterAid works.

The Google Earth Outreach programme gives NGOs and charities the skills and resources via Google Earth and Maps to show their work and highlight their cause to a mass audience.

It means charities can overlay written, audio and video information onto Google Earth in what is known as a layer and have their work viewed by people across the globe.

Rebecca Moore, Head of Earth Outreach at Google, said, "Charities and NGOs are constantly looking for new ways to make people aware of the issues they are trying to solve. Putting information into its geographical context makes it possible to show the complexity and the effect of the work of organisations such as WaterAid"

WaterAid's Vincent Casey said, "This Google Earth layer will help WaterAid highlight the life threatening water supply and sanitation issues that affect billions of people every day. It also gives us a platform to demonstrate the work that WaterAid and our partners are doing to address the water and sanitation crisis, and allows us to communicate simply and effectively how WaterAid is making a difference."

The WaterAid layer can be found in the Global Awareness folder of the Featured Content section in Google Earth. To download Google Earth for free go to www.google.co.uk/earth. You can view a demo here:
