On Thursday 8 November in Sydney, WaterAid supporters and guests attended the opening night of Gemma Lynch-Memory's sensational project "emily:explorer", a national touring exhibition (to take place in each capital city during 2008) that celebrates the achievement of Australia's first female outback explorer and the landscape she explored.

In April 2007, the artist Gemma Lynch-Memory became the first woman to retrace the journey of Australia's first female outback explorer, Emily Caroline Creaghe. This remarkable journey is now research for a series of 'emily:explorer' exhibitions to be held throughout Australia. WaterAid Australia will be holding VIP exhibition previews around the country and will be auctioning off two pieces of Gemma Lynch Memory’s unique and highly sought after work which have a total value of $20,000. Find out more on the Gemma Lynch-Memory website.

It is believed the death of Emily's first child from drinking contaminated water played a large part in her decision to join the 1883 expedition. In honour of this, part of the proceeds from the opening night, as well as the entire fee paid for two select works will be donated to WaterAid Australia.

The exhibition will be travelling on to Canberra, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne throughout 2008 - so watch this space for details of your nearest exhibition.
