The decision to establish WaterAid Burkina Faso dates back in March 1999 when WaterAid decided to implement pilot projects in Mali and Burkina Faso as part of its drive to set up country programmes in French-speaking Africa.

Work was started on a one year pilot project in February 2001 and, following an external evaluation, became a fully fledged Wateraid country programme in December that year.

Throughout 2003 and 2004, WaterAid Burkina Faso extended its project work to other areas of the country including Comin (Yanga, Dourtenga, Lalgaye and Ouargaye) in the province of Koulpéologo; Imasgo in the province of Boulkiemdé; Dano in the province of Ioba; the districts of Sigh-Nogin and Bogodogo in the borough of Ouagadougou, and the boroughs of Boromo, Koudougou and Garango.
