WaterAid Burkina Faso, in collaboration with the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation Media Network RICHE, organised a press debate on 17 July 2008 in Ouagadougou.
Called to discuss the outcomes of the 11th African Union (AU) Summit, held in Egypt, the event focused on how the media and its partners can contribute to stimulating the President in respecting his commitments to help reach the Millennium Development Goal for water and sanitation.
While the journalists agreed that getting water and sanitation on the agenda was a step closer to reaching a solution for the crisis, it was regrettable that political issues took over the majority of the summit.
During the debate the journalists resolved to approach the highest authorities on the issue, urging to hear how the AU leaders plan to meet their commitments. They concluded that Burkina Faso can make significant progress in water and sanitation if behavioural change is encouraged. This is to be re-enforced through dedicated press coverage and awareness raising events. The journalists also committed to play their role as advocates of the poor, ensuring that water and sanitation are placed among the top five development priorities in Burkina Faso. This commitment is crucial if the country is to come any closer to reaching its Millennium Development Goals.
