On January 22 a workshop launched the ARD/USAID cofounded project 'Water, hygiene and sanitation in 8 urban local governments in Burkina'.

The project aims to improve good hygiene practices and increase access to safe water and sanitation for 9,000 people and 12,400 people respectively in Burkina Faso's 8 urban local Government districts by September 2010.

Five of WaterAid's partners in the region will be implementing this project through Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), borehole and latrine construction, training of school teachers, and other established practices.

This $500,000 project will enable WaterAid to extend its much needed urban work in Burkina Faso, which currently stands at just 9% (mid term review of the Country Program strategy 2006/2011 (2009).
