WaterAid in Ethiopia celebrated this year's World Toilet Day through a media discussion highlighting that 2.5 billion people worldwide are still living without access to safe, private toilets.
The water, sanitation and hygiene movement WASH Ethiopia held a media panel discussion in the capital Addis Ababa to mark World Toilet Day.
WASH, hosted by WaterAid in Ethiopia, is a coalition of representatives from government, non-government and faith-based organisations, UN agencies, the media and the private sector. Together they work to gain political and social commitment to addressing the water, sanitation and hygiene issues affecting the country.
Watch our short film that was transmitted on the national
television channel around World Toilet Day to raise
awareness about solid waste management.
Speakers at the panel discussion talked about the key messages of World Toilet Day and the International Year of Sanitation and the lack of adequate latrines and hygiene education across the nation.
'Hidar Sitaten', an annual event where people burn their solid waste, was identified by the movement as an unsafe practice and a film was shown on the national television channel to illustrate that people should manage, recycle or dispose of their waste on a more regular basis.
