Water for African Cities

Sabon Zongo to benefit from the Water for African Cities project Water for African Cities is a joint UN-HABITAT and Ghana Government project involving several partners, including WaterAid Ghana, Ghana Water Company Limited, Ghana Education Service and the Water Resources Commission.

The project aims to provide water and sanitation services to deprived urban communities and actively seeks to involve them in the process.

The UN's International Year of Sanitation in Ghana

International Year of SanitationOn 4 December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution declaring 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation to help boost the slow and insufficient progress made in achieving the global target.

In Ghana, a National Planning Committee was inaugurated on 10 January 2008 to plan activities for the UN International Year of Sanitation.

WaterAid partner APDO pilots BioSand filters

WaterAid partner APDO pilots BioSand filtersThe low water table and the inaccessibility of areas along the Volta Lake in the Afram Plains has made it hard for communities living there to gain access to potable water as it is virtually impossible to get drilling rigs to the communities.

But now WaterAid partner APDO is using BioSand filters to ensure hard to reach communities gain access to clean water.

Community Led Total Sanitation takes off in the Afram Plains

Community Led Total Sanitation Takes off in the Afram PlainsA new approach, Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), innovated in Asia, has come to West Africa.

CLTS is community mobilisation and hygiene education approach that involves virtually no subsidy to users. WaterAid has piloted the approach in Nigeria and is promoting it in Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali.
