The construction of sanitation facilities for a group of primary schools at Sabon Zongo, an urban slum in Accra, has been delayed due to a land dispute.

The Sabon Zongo area, like many other urban slums in Ghana, is in dire need for improved sanitation facilities. The Water for African Cities (WAC-II) project, providing new sanitation, drainage and waste disposal facilities, is expected to radically improve the community's living conditions.

According to WaterAid Ghana's Stephen Ntow, there was no indication that the project would encounter any problems. Much preparation had been taken, including the creation of a Community Development Committee (CDC) to manage the systems on the ground and to mobilise the community. Mr Ntow is, however, hopeful of a timely resolution. He explained that the Town and Country planning department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has been mediating the dispute.
