ORAP

Oboomma Rural Action Programme (ORAP)

Location and districts covered
ORAP is located in Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region. The organisation operates in four districts, three in the Eastern Region and one in the Ashanti Region. These are: Kwahu South, East Akim, Birim North, and Asante Akim South.

History
ORAP was created in 1981 through a group of individuals who were concerned about the water and sanitation problems that prevailed in the Kwahu South District at the time. The idea for an intensified campaign for water and sanitation in the district came up when the campaign became part of the activities for the National Service personnel in the district. The group sent a proposal to WaterAid for support and the latter insisted on dealing with duly registered organisations. This prompted the group to register ORAP as an NGO in water and sanitation. WaterAid then became, and still remains, the leading supporter of ORAP in terms of funds and capacity building for service delivery and organisational development.

Activities
ORAP's main activities are water provision, sanitation improvement, hygiene promotion, advocacy, and HIV/AIDS awareness creation.

Achievements
ORAP has supported the construction of about 320 had dug wells fitted with hand pumps so far. They have also facilitated, supported, and promoted the use of more than 300 household and institutional Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines. In addition, they have trained more than 1,600 people in hygiene promotion and facility management. They have grouped these people into Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committees. ORAP has again trained about 75 latrine artisans in latrine construction and maintenance.
