NewEnergy
Location and districts covered
NewEnergy is located in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana. It operates in four districts of the region, namely: West Mamprusi, Gushiegu Karaga, tamale Municipality, and Tolon Kumbungu.
History
NewEnergy was founded in 1994 at a time when the vast majority of communities in the region needed development services especially in water and sanitation delivery. It became a WaterAid partner soon after its creation and has remained a partner to date.
Activities
NewEnergy's main activities are the provision of water and sanitation facilities, hygiene promotion, advocacy, micro-credit, enterprise development training, environmental conservation, and renewable energy services.
Achievements
Since 1995, NewEnergy has supported the construction of about 200 hand-dug wells, more than ten tube wells, four rain catchment tanks, and about 300 household Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines. The organisation has also created and trained over 200 water and sanitation committees and about 80 latrine artisans. More than 350 women have also benefited from the micro credit scheme and the enterprise development training.
NewEnergy has again installed solar power and lighting systems in about 20 rural clinics, 150 households, and one vocational centre. They have also distributed hundreds of solar lamps to selected adult literacy classes in rural areas to facilitate learning at night.
The organisation has also reforested about 30 acres of land along the White Volta under their Environmental Conservation Programme.
