Rural Aid
Location and districts covered
Rural Aid is located in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. It operates in all the six districts of the region, namely: Bolgatanga, Bawku East, Bawku West, Bongo, Builsa, and Kasena Nankana.
History
Rural Aid was born in 1986, when Anglican Sisters received funding from WaterAid in London to provide water to communities in the Upper East Region. After the Sisters completed their projects, the organisation was restructured and named Upper East Rural Development Project (UPPERDEP). It was later renamed Rural aid and has since remained a very mature WaterAid partner.
Over time, the organisation realized that water provision alone was not enough to stop the spread of diseases. Sanitation and hygiene promotion were integrated with water provision.
Activities and Achievements
Rural Aid engages mainly in water, sanitation, hygiene promotion and advocacy activities. Over the years, Rural Aid has been able to support the provision of more than 1, 500 hand dug wells and boreholes, more than 1,000 household and institutional latrines and the creation and training of hundreds of water and sanitation committees.
The Organisation
For administrative purposes, the organisation has a head office in Bolgatanga headed by the Programme Coordinator, District offices headed by District Managers, and Zones coordinated by Zonal Based Facilitators (ZBFs).
