WaterAid India considers sustainable access to safe water and sanitation as a basic human right and works to achieve this through a variety of ways:

Prioritising the restoration of existing water sources before creating new ones.

Ensuring women's access to water and sanitation is a key focus of programme delivery.

Working with children so that they spread hygienic practices and serve as agents of change.

Working in partnership with governments and civil society organisations to implement projects.

Using an integrated approach to address water, sanitation, health and hygiene issues.
WaterAid India's main activities are:
Water

Rehabilitation of defunct water sources

Development of new sources in remote areas

Community maintenance and sustainability of water sources

Water quality and safety testing

Recharging of water sources through appropriate rainwater conservation measures
Sanitation

Triggering change in sanitation behaviour through community-led total sanitation approach

Supporting partners to spend government funds appropriately

Supporting sanitation in urban areas through child friendly toilets, community managed sanitation and washing/bathing complexes in urban slums
Hygiene
-
Encouraging safe disposal of faeces, safe handling of drinking water and handwashing

Creating a trained cadre for promoting hygiene (community based organisations, SHGs, Schools, Youths, Panchayats etc)
-
Nominating children as ambassadors of change
