WaterAid India's three key objectives for 2006-10 are:

  • Ensuring improved access to safe, adequate and sustainable water supply and sanitation through water, sanitation and hygiene projects.
  • Creating a knowledge base for promotion and dissemination of best practice for influencing policies and practices towards sustainable health and hygiene benefits.
  • Developing and fostering an enabling environment for effective programme implementation, in-country funding, organisational effectiveness, learning and growth.

For the period of 2006-10, WaterAid India plans to continue its focus on water, sanitation and hygiene education by working with local partners on community managed projects.

It aims to ensure that at least 245,000 people gain access to safe water and at least 200,000 people gain access to improved sanitation each year by 2010, contributing to reaching India's Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe water and sanitation by 2015.

It also aims to deliver hygiene education to 80% of the people in intervention areas to ensure sustainable good hygiene practices and a consequent 80% reduction in incidences of diarrhoea among children under five.
