WaterAid started pilot projects in Mali in 2001 with the aim of increasing low-income communities' access to water, sanitation and hygiene. Since its establishment, WaterAid Mali has been working with a local NGO called Jigi in poor areas of the capital city Bamako, in areas including Nafadji Doumanzana where there was a complete lack of safe drinking water points for a population of approximately 6000.
In December 2001 the programme expanded to Korofina Sud, another part of Bamako with similar problems concerning access to safe water. WaterAid entered into partnership with a local NGO named AMASBIF and a tripartite agreement between AMASBIF, WaterAid and the community representatives was signed.
WaterAid started interventions in rural areas in 2003 in the Koulikoro region through its partner Dialakoroba. In Mali, WaterAid's non governmental organisation partners are ADDA, ARAFD, ALPHALOG, AMASBIF, AMEPPE, AMPDR and JIGI.
In addition to these organisations, there are local partner communities like the communes of Kalabancoro, Fana, and Dialakoroba in Koulikoro Region, and Commune One and Kati.
