WaterAid has been working in Nigeria since 1995. We have built strong relationships with governments and communities to help provide clean water and safe sanitation to those most in need.

Our history in Nigeria

View our global history >

WaterAid began work in Nigeria in 1995 to assist with the vast water and sanitation needs here.

Following our first project in Etche, Rivers State, we moved to Benue State in 1996 to manage the Department for International Development (DFID) Water and Sanitation Project in Oju Local Government Area.

WaterAid Nigeria quickly built up a successful reputation for knowledge and expertise in the field. We continued to expand our programme and, by 2006, we were operating in 30 local areas across six of Nigeria's 36 states.

We began working with a range of local partners in a number of different environments, sharing the lessons learned with others and making sure we always use the most practical, appropriate and long lasting solutions that can be managed by communities themselves.

We have developed a ranking system to identify those areas most in need and work in partnership with communities and local governments to get vital services where they are needed most.
