WaterAid works with State and Local Government Partners in Benue State.

Ministry of Water Resources, Benue State
The Benue State Ministry of Water Resources is one of the indirect partners WaterAid Nigeria has related with over the years. The level of interaction had been in a strategic form rather than funding.

Some of the areas of past collaborations include capacity building for Ministry staff, involvement in the development of strategic documents for WaterAid Nigeria and the water and sanitation sector, e.g. development process of WaterAid's Country Strategy, WaterAid's water quality policy, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) workshop and Annual review in Kaduna in 2003. WaterAid is still in dialogue with MWR&E on the management of the Department for International Development (DFID) rig in Benue for commercial purposes.

Recently WaterAid Nigeria decided to develop a direct strategic relationship with the MWR&E. The aim is to collaborate with the Ministry in areas of common focus such as semi urban work.

Local Government Partners

Hitherto all of WaterAid's work in Benue has been in the rural areas where WaterAid works with four LGAs. Working with the ministry in this area will help deepen the relationship and hopefully will open more avenues for state level work and hence influence over state level policies which will at the end have a greater impact on the poor in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene and also help in the achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Local Governments have the primary responsibility for the delivery of water supply, sanitation and hygiene education in a decentralised federal system.
