Where we work
WaterAid currently works in over 100 communities in Bauchi, Benue and Plateau states, assisting the water and sanitation units (WASUs) of local government councils and NGO partners to deliver water and sanitation services to the poor.
Besides helping communities to establish safe water supplies and latrines, WaterAid and the WASUs promote good hygiene and sanitation behaviour, such as hand washing at critical times and the proper use and maintenance of latrines.
To encourage work between the communities and local governments and to reduce the perception that people in power divert support to their personal contacts rather than those in need, WaterAid has developed a transparent system for selecting which communities to support, called the Self-Selection Criteria. Using vulnerability ranking, the system determines communities' level of poverty according to indicators that they suggest themselves.
Working in these three states gives WaterAid experience of working with a range of partners and in a variety of policy environments. WaterAid is sharing the lessons it has learnt about how to best deliver water and sanitation services across the sector in Nigeria.
WaterAid is perhaps the leading organisation in Nigeria promoting the integration of sanitation, water supply and hygiene education while using a community based approach, low cost appropriate technologies and working with local partners. WaterAid's work in its three focal states is today considered an example of best practice in Nigeria in the development of state level capacity and integrated projects.
