Our policy position

In July, governments will gather for the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD3) in Addis Ababa.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to identify the financial resources needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.

In September, world leaders will meet at the United Nations in New York to agree the SDGs after three years of negotiation. The Addis Accord, which will be decided at FFD3, will commit all governments to a framework for financing these goals.

The Addis Accord will also provide guidance for financing policies and strategies needed to implement the SDGs at a national level.

WaterAid is aiming to influence national and international financing for development discussions and documents to secure effective references to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), aid effectiveness and financing universal access.

We are calling for:

  • The Addis Accord to commit to respecting, promoting and fulfilling human rights, including education, health, water and sanitation.
  • Substantial increases in domestic and international resources for sustainable development. This is vital to achieve universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.
  • A strong focus on equity and sustainability services. The Addis Accord must incorporate action to address financial absorption and human resource constraints.
  • The Addis Accord to leave no one behind. It must have a rights based approach to sustainable development financing.
