We are committed to making a lasting difference to people most in need. To achieve this, having an accurate picture of water and sanitation service levels and hygiene behaviours across the world is essential.

WaterAid and monitoring and accountability

We support monitoring and accountability at three different levels:

Across the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, evidence is needed to inform policies, plans and investments aimed at increasing and sustaining services, and bringing about progress towards achieving national and Sustainable Development Goals. Service users and civil society groups use this evidence to hold providers to account and to campaign for improvements.

Any agency involved in delivering WASH services – whether a private company, government body or an NGO like us – should be accountable for the quality and effectiveness of work that it does. For this reason, we also monitor our own performance and that of our partners.

We campaign for greater transparency in the funding and operation of the WASH sector to ensure money is spent and improvements made in the most effective way.
