Global monitoring and accountability

Reaching everyone everywhere with safe water, sanitation and hygiene will require a coordinated global effort. WaterAid cannot achieve this vision alone – we must work with governments, the private sector and other NGOs. Together we are accountable for progress towards universal access to WASH.

Global monitoring helps governments benchmark data and see year on year progress, understand the impact of their policies, and see how they are doing in comparison with others. It also makes it possible to hold them and other service providers, as well as donors, to account for their commitments.

In the Global Goals era, the role of regional and global monitoring will change to focus more on experience sharing and periodic thematic reports, while the accountability for targets will be based primarily on national monitoring.

Our vision is of an informed and accountable international community working together to end the WASH crisis by 2030.
