Money doesn't grow on trees… it grows on Geraniums!

Young WaterAid supporter Alex Bonner has been using his green fingers to raise funds for our work by growing and selling geraniums outside his home in Portsmouth.

After realizing how lucky he was to have safe water at the turn of a tap, he decided to put his gardening skills to good use, and plans to raise money for WaterAid throughout the summer.

Thank you Alex!

Freshwater Café

5 year old Danny Kuhrt
5 year old Danny Kuhrt

Five year old Danny and his family have been busy raising funds for WaterAid by holding a Freshwater Café in their home. Danny’s mum Nikki explains what they did.

"A few months ago I was watching television with my son Danny and we saw a charity appeal for WaterAid. Danny was shocked to find out that some schoolchildren have to walk miles just to get water and this made quite an impact on him.

"Danny and his brother three year old Tom love to make pretend cafes in their bedroom, setting up food and menus and inviting in guests so we decided it would be a good idea to run a real cafe in our house for Wateraid.

"Danny came up with the name Freshwater Cafe and we gave out fliers to friends , family and neighbours. On the day, heavy rain prevented us using the front driveway as planned so we squeezed tables inside the house and under the back garden canopy. We even had room for a bring and buy stall in the dining room. We sold general knowledge quizzes and ran a 'Guess the sweets in the jar' competition!

"In the 2 hours, over 50 adults and children visited and ate lots of cake and drank lots of coffee. We even had a children's cocktail menu. It was brilliant to see neighbours, family and school friends all squeezed in together! At the end of the day we had raised £300. We were amazed.

"Danny took your certificate into school and his teacher asked him to share the experience with the class and said he was a good citizen!

"Thanks for the leaflets. We also found your website very helpful for creating some 'water facts' sheets for the cafe. Danny's certificate is next to his bed in pride of place."

One of WaterAid's youngest supporters!

Three year old Ben from Poole was inspired to support WaterAid after seeing an advert on TV about WaterAid's work.

Ben has decided to donate £2 of his hard earned pocket money per month - a very kind and generous thought that will help change the lives of many of the world's poorest people.

Thank you to Ben and his parents for being such inspiring supporters!

Super swimmer!

Ten year old Sea Scout Jacob decided to do a sponsored swim with the aim to provide at least one family with a toilet, as he could not imagine life without one.

Jacob Renouf
Jacob raised a whopping £1,011.30!

His Scout group backed the idea and Jacob was able to give everyone in the group an empty water bottle, which the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers brought back full of money as part of their Group International Award.

Jacob raised an amazing £1,011.30 through his sponsored swim to the surprise and delight of WaterAid and his Scout Leader, Hilary Farrow. Jacob was amazed that as a 10 year old he could really make a difference!

Ice cool fundraisers

Summer 2006 was very hot!

Five year old Emelia and her friend Amelia, also five, raised £41 at a little fundraising ice-cream stall in Emelia's front garden.

They displayed WaterAid posters, plus a home-made banner and decorations to attract the passing school traffic.

Ice-cream crazy customers included three-year-old Harriet!

Children and parents visiting the stall could look at buckets of clean and dirty water and see how far they could carry the water.

Emelia and Amelia wanted to support WaterAid because they had experienced a drought in their area. This made them think about the importance of not wasting water, and how lucky they were to have safe, clean water.

A great event that raised money and got people thinking about why water matters.
Well done to Emilia and Amelia!
