WaterAid Uganda aims to expand provision of safe water and sanitation services to impoverished communities of Uganda.
How we work
WaterAid uses three main approaches.

Working with partners; collaboration with the government of Uganda, local NGOs, donors and other service providers.

Integrated approach; integration of water, hygiene sanitation and community management to ensure that benefits brought by safe water can be maximized.

Participatory approach: ensuring that communities play a leading role in planning, implementation and management of water and sanitation projects.
WaterAid promotes simple, low cost, sustainable technologies that suit local conditions, some examples are:
Overview of WaterAid's work in Uganda

Phase I 1983-85 Semi-direct approach. Worked with Busoga diocese rehabilitating boreholes and protecting springs and shallow wells.

Phase II 1986-92 Direct and indirect approach. Expanded work in eastern and south-western Uganda. Also worked with North Kigezi Diocese (NKD) and West Ankole Diocese (WAD), and implemented direct project in Mbale developing springs and shallow well designs and implementing one-off pumped schemes and Gravity Flow Systems (GFSs).

Phase III 1992-95 Direct implementation as well as continued semi-direct work with NKD and WAD. Expanded Mbale programme (GFSs and Muyembe shallow wells), expanded to Kabarole (shallow well programme) and Kasese (Bwera GFS).

Phase IV 1996-99 Partnership approach with individual NGOs in 10 districts: Kisoro (GTA), Rukungiri (NKD), Bushenyi (WAD), Kasese (Kasanga CBHC), Kabarole (WAU), Kyenjojo (JESE), Mpigi (KDF), Kayunga (USEP), Kapchorwa (MADZI), and Katakwi (WEDA). Started supporting student's industrial/practical field training in project areas.

Phase V 2000-05 District support programme. Partnership within decentralisation framework. Capacity building for actors in the districts, planning, supervision and co-ordination with the districts, service delivery through LNGOs (and some private sector) in the districts. Seven partners in Mpigi, Wakiso, and Katakwi districts.

Phase VI 2005-10 Scaling up service delivery. Expanded partnership with DLG, NGOs, and private sector working within the decentralisation and sector framework and addressing equity and Millennium Developent Goals at district and sub-county levels.
Where we work
WaterAid Uganda has recently expanded work in eastern and south-western Uganda and now have offices in Wakiso, Mpigi and Katakwi (WEDA) districts as well as in Kampala.
WaterAid has also worked with the Busoga and West Ankole Diocese in Western Uganda and the North Kigezi Diocese in south-west of Uganda and in the following districts: Kisoro (GTA), Rukungiri (NKD), Bushenyi (WAD), Kasese (south west)(Kasanga CBHC), Kabarole (WAU), Kyenjojo (JESE), Mpigi (KDF), Kayunga (USEP), Mbale in Eastern region, Kabarole (district in Western Uganda and Kapchorwa (MADZI).
