WaterAid is teaming up with The Guardian newspaper and seven other development organisations to launch a unique journalism competition.

In recognition that journalists play a key role in raising awareness of the complex issues facing the developing world, the Guardian International Development Journalism Competition is inviting entries from freelance journalists and budding amateurs who strive to shed light on such topics. Organisers of the contest hope that it will motivate a new generation of journalists to increase the media's coverage of development issues, and in turn play a part in reducing global poverty.

The competition commences on 10 March 2008 with the financial support of the Department for International Development. In addition to WaterAid, other organisations involved in the project are Camfed International, HelpAge International, International HIV/AIDS Alliance, Malaria Consortium, Plan UK, Sightsavers International and Marie Stopes international.
