Jacob Renouf, a ten year old from 9th Lymington Sea Scouts was inspired to raise money for WaterAid after hearing that 5,000 children die every day because they can not access clean water.
He decided to do a sponsored swim with the aim to provide at least one family with a toilet, as he could not imagine life without one.
9th Lymington Sea Scout group backed his idea and Jacob was able to give everyone in the group a bottle of water, which the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers brought back full of money as part of their Group International Award.
On Monday 8 June, Hazel Taylor came along to the group and told the young people present about WaterAid's mission to overcome poverty by enabling the world's poorest people to have access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. The group, represented by Patrol Leader Abbie Simpson, Cub Sam Martin and Beaver Angus Wright, presented a cheque for £303.61 from the money they had collected in bottles.
Jacob then presented WaterAid with a second cheque for a staggering £1,011.30 that he raised with his sponsored swin to the surprise and delight of WaterAid and his Scout Leader, Hilary Farrow. Jacob thanked the group for their support, and was amazed that as a 10 year old he could really make a difference.
The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts then went outside to discover how difficult it can be to transport water over a distance, to reinforce that instant water is a luxury many do not have.
£15 is enough to give one person a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. Jacob and the 9th Lymington Sea Scouts donated £1314.91p, which really will make a difference to lots of children.
