Humphrey the camel and his three human bearers from Thames Water were among those running for WaterAid this year.
2004’s Flora London Marathon went exceptionally well for WaterAid. 107 WaterAid runners braved the wet and windy weather to finish the 26.2 mile course from Greenwich to The Mall.
The team was greeted at the finish line by a large group of WaterAid volunteers and physiotherapists for a post race party where over 200 supporters joined them. A huge thank you to all the runners and their supporters – we are hoping that the event will raise over £75,000 for WaterAid’s vital work.
WaterAid has 15 guaranteed places available for the 2005 Flora London Marathon and also welcomes own place runners on the team. Our runners are supported every step of the way in their fundraising and training. If you would like to find out more please email events@wateraid.org.
Two new ways to share the gift of water
Are you one of the 12 million people in the UK who own shares? Did you know that you can use those shares to help WaterAid bring safe water and sanitation to some of the world’s poorest people?
Giving shares is simple and extremely taxefficient for you. In another new scheme launched in April, you can now also give to WaterAid via your self assessment tax return, donating part or all of any tax repayment due to you this year. All you need to do is enter WaterAid’s details in the relevant section of the tax return form (WaterAid’s unique code is CAC11MG). Gifts made in this
way will also be eligible for Gift Aid, so your generosity goes even further.
To learn more about donating shares to WaterAid or giving via your self assessment tax return, please see our website www.wateraid.org/shares, or contact Anna by emailing shares@wateraid.org or calling 020 7793 4516.
Aladdin and the Magic Bucket

Stuck for ideas for your Christmas entertainment? Want to have fun while raising funds for WaterAid? Look no further than the WaterAid pantomime - Aladdin and the Magic Bucket - written by Paul Aust. The pantomime, which provides a fresh take on the story of Aladdin, is set in a village in Africa, where evil is afoot and the water supply is being polluted by an unknown source.
Adult and youth groups alike have enjoyed the script and used it to put on performances. For example members of 71st Reading Sea Scouts directed and produced the pantomime themselves and performed it to an audience of 200 raising £806 for WaterAid. “It is rare to find a panto that is actually funny; this had us laughing even in rehearsal” says Claire Isbester, Whitchurch Amatuer Dramatics Society.
A pantomime pack can de downloaded from www.wateraid.org/pantomime or you can contact Steve on 020 7793 4575 or stevewatson@wateraid.org
Speaking out for WaterAid
WaterAid is very fortunate to have a network of volunteer speakers who give talks on behalf of WaterAid to a wide range of groups within the community. Speakers play an important role both through raising awareness of our work and by giving local groups an opportunity to become more involved with WaterAid.
Phil Renton, who works for Thames Water and became a WaterAid speaker in the early 1980s, explains why he finds being a speaker rewarding
“My primary focus for talks has been to school groups. I can honestly say that for each talk I have delivered, I have been inspired by the interest, enthusiasm and support from the students. The variety of questions and observations are always a challenge, one or two that particularly come to mind are ‘Why is water wet?’ and ‘Why is water heavy?’ Answers on a postcard please! From feedback on the day and repeat requests for subsequent talks, I am confident that the profile and the need for WaterAid has been sown in the minds of the students and hopefully they will continue to support WaterAid for the rest of their lives.”
If you are interested in becoming a WaterAid speaker yourself or would like to book a speaker for an event then please contact Steve Watson on 020 7793 4575.
Give the gift of water this harvest
“By giving the gift of water this harvest time, your church can help give the gift of life” The Right Reverend John Sentamu Bishop of Birmingham.
As harvest time draws near we find ourselves once more thinking about the necessity of water in our lives. Without it crops fail and humans and animals perish within days. Thousands of churches and local groups around the country focus on the need for water and sanitation at harvest time and we hope that you will too.
Due to popular demand WaterAid has once again produced a free Church harvest pack which can be used during your harvest festivities to support WaterAid’s vision of a world in which everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. Focusing on Malawi, the pack includes service ideas and activities as well as a new resource on how your church can publicise its activities in the community.
For more information or to download a pack click here, email churches@wateraid.org or or call Steve Watson on 020 7793 4575.
