End Water Poverty

End Water Poverty

Every year nearly two million children die because they do not have access to safe water and sanitation. This can, and must, change.

But the political will to ensure water and sanitation are prioritised is lacking.

We need to increase the pressure so that water and sanitation reach the world's poorest and most vulnerable people, which is why WaterAid is a founding member of the End Water Poverty campaign.

This new, global campaign will inform key decision makers about the nature, extent and impact of the global water and sanitation crisis and demand they take action to solve it.

We need you to support the call to End Water Poverty - together we will make a difference.

End Water Poverty is calling for:

  • One global action plan for sanitation and water monitored by one global task force
  • 70% of aid money for sanitation and water to be targeted at the poorest countries
  • Water resources to be protected and shared equitably

The first task of the campaign is to lobby the German Government, as the hosts of this year's G8 meeting in June, to commit to a global action plan for sanitation and water. Groups in countries around the world will be meeting their German Ambassador to call for action from the G8, the leaders of the eight most powerful economies in the world, who meet annually to discuss global issues that affect us all.

If the G8 are serious about development they must immediately recognise that poverty will never be overcome as long as billions of people have no clean water to drink and nowhere safe to go to the toilet. Failure to act is morally, intellectually and economically indefensible.

In the UK you can support End Water Poverty by sending a campaign postcard to Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, who is hosting the meeting. Help us demand that the G8 commit to a global action plan for sanitation and water.

Campaigning works!
So far, through our campaigns, we have helped to ensure that sanitation was included in the Millennium Development Goal targets to halve world poverty by 2015, that the UK Government increased the amount of aid spent on water and sanitation and that the European Union has begun to focus more on these basic needs.
Public pressure works and is essential to change global policies.
