HRH Prince Charles visits Uganda

WaterAid's President, HRH Prince Charles, visited our work in the Kawempe slum in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

The Prince spent time visiting a new water kiosk and hearing about the difference it had made to the lives of the local attendant and other members of the community. "By giving his time to listen to local people the Prince offers encouragement to other communities to work together to improve their access to water and sanitation," explained Tim Fowler, WaterAid's Country Representative in Uganda.

Spreading sanitation

A new approach to sanitation, called community led total sanitation, is spreading across the countries where we work. Through it communities learn about the impact of the lack of sanitation and then disgust and peer pressure encourages everyone to join forces and take action building their own latrines. Its success in Bangladesh led to WaterAid helping nearly one million people gain access to sanitation last year alone and this year we hope to reach even more.

End Water Poverty in Mali

End Water Poverty in Mali

The End Water Poverty campaign was officially launched in Mali on World Toilet Day, 19 November 2007, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Amadou Toumani Touré. Many hundreds of people witnessed this unique event to mark a new phase in the Malian republic's commitment to sanitation. In his speech the President said, "It is time that the international community and national decision makers fulfill their commitments [to alleviate poverty]."

Malian musicians Ensemble Instrumental du Mali performed a sanitation song written especially for the occasion and later a concert took place featuring popular singers including Salif Keita and Amadou and Mariam, who have now agreed to become 'Sanitation Ambassadors' on behalf of the campaign in Mali.

Children sing for water

Five new songs written by WaterAid supporter and songwriter Richard Stilgoe were premiered at the Music for Youth Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in November. The songs are entitled Five thousand children to symbolise the number of children who die every day from preventable water-related diseases. Schools across the UK have been performing the songs to raise funds and awareness for WaterAid.
