WaterAid was established by Trust Deed on 21 July 1981. It was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in 1984 and was registered with the Charity Commission in the same year.
HRH, The Prince of Wales has been WaterAid's President since 1991. The Prince and three Vice Presidents act as figureheads for the organisation and help to promote WaterAid's mission to overcome poverty.
WaterAid is governed by a Board of Trustees, who are responsible for ensuring that the charity is well-managed in line with its vision and mission and that it abides by its charitable objectives.
The Trustees appoint WaterAid's Chief Executive, who, along with the Directors, is responsible for managing the organisation of WaterAid's five departments:
- International Programmes
- Policy and Campaigns
- Communications and Fundraising
- Finance
- Human Resources
The five departments in the UK – Policy and Campaigns, Finance and IT, Communications and Fundraising, International Programmes and Human Resources – work together towards WaterAid's vision of a world where everybody has access to clean water and sanitation.
Our people
The effort, commitment and skills of our staff and volunteers are at the heart of our organisation. Currently (2009) WaterAid employs more than 400 staff in our country programmes and more than 170 in our UK offices. WaterAid is committed to its staff and is an investor in people.
Our volunteers play a crucial role in our work, the majority giving support by helping with fundraising events in the UK. Many of our long-standing volunteers have worked with us for a considerable period of time, contributing invaluable time and skills to the organisation.
