How will WaterAid use my gift?

A gift of shares to WaterAid can be sold to generate vital funds, that we are able to use straight away to help our work with poor communities in Africa and Asia. The administration costs incurred are low, meaning that share gifts also help us raise funds even more efficiently.

By giving shares to WaterAid, whatever their value, you can help people in developing countries help themselves to a better future. Here are some examples of what we can achieve, with your support:

£120 pays for a bicycle and a month's salary for a rural health educator in Uganda

Thirty-nine-year-old Francis is a hygiene and sanitation promoter in Wera County, Uganda. She shows families how to wash dishes effectively and to build racks to dry them safely, off the ground. She also teaches the importance of washing hands after visiting the latrine. "People are listening to what we say," says Francis. "We make friends with the families and people are slowly changing their behaviour."

£535 pays for the construction of a 15 metre hand-dug well (including training) in Zambia

Robby Muchinda is a 49-year-old farmer in Tambala, in the Monze District of Zambia. He is pictured here helping to dig the WaterAid-funded well in his village. "The problem of water for the community inspired me to volunteer to be part of the team doing the digging. I dig because children here have bilharzia from the stream. 20 children are sick with bilharzia at the moment. It is painful but they are brave and try not to cry."

£3000 can train 1000 staff of mother-and-child care centres in India, who in turn can influence 50,000 mothers and children to adopt good hygiene practices

Twelve-year-old Martin lives in Kalmandhai slum, in Tamil Nadu, southern India. With WaterAid and its local partner's support the slum achieved 100% sanitation in 2002, a national first for an inner-city slum. "I wash my hands to make my hands clean and prevent me from getting germs. Cholera, dysentery and diarrhoea are all diseases you can get if you don't wash your hands. Before we had these toilets we used to use ditches. Now I use the children's latrine. I like the animals painted on the wall," says Martin.
