Very strenuous routes

To complete our ambitious challenge of putting two teams on top of all 214 Wainwrights on 11 June, we still need teams to take on the following five very strenuous walks:

Coniston Fells - Very Strenuous
A tough and long 20.8km walk taking in all the high peaks to the north and west of Coniston. There are seven Wainwrights to climb – Wetherlam, Swirl How, Great Carrs, Grey Friar, Brim Fell, Coniston Old Man and Dow Crag. Look out for evidence of slate and copper mining throughout the walk.

Glenridding Circuit - Very Strenuous
This is a long high walk over 6 Wainwrights. An extra detour after White Side can include Helvellyn. This walk crosses Swirral Edge so all members of the group need to be experienced on high level, narrow ridge and rocky walking, especially if windy. The Wainwrights are Glenridding Dodd, Sheffield Pike, Hart Side, Raise, White Side and Catstye Cam. If clear the views are excellent. The walk starts and finishes at Glenridding.

Greater Kentmere Horseshoe - Very Strenuous
A very challenging day out that includes over 1300m of ascent and 23km of walking. 10 Wainrights are traversed: Yoke, Ill bell, Frostwick, Thornethwaite Crag, Gray Crag, High Street, Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell, Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts.  It is one of the longest and most remote walks in the Lake District.  It requires fitness, a good knowledge of the hills and commitment.  It may be shortened slightly by omitting Gray Crag and High Street.

Newlands Watershed - Very Strenuous – Sold out for new teams
This is a long walk taking in 10 Wainwrights around the Newlands Valley which requires a quite a lot of climbing to connect together long ridges.  Starting at Skelgill, it climbs over Catbells, Maiden Moor and High Spy, dropping to the picturesque Dalehead Tarn.  Another steep climb to Dalehead accesses a relatively easy grassy ridge connecting Hindscarth and Robinson before descending to Newlands Hause via  Moss Force. Easy ridge walking over Knott Rigg and Ard Crags precedes crossing the ravine of Rigg Beck to gain the Scar Crags and the final ridge to Causey Pike, returning to Skelgill.
