Stand up!
23 October 2008
More than 116 million people, nearly 2% of the world's population, stood up against poverty during the weekend of 17-19 October 2008.
Individuals, groups and communities stood up to tell the world they are against global poverty and to demand that world leaders keep their promises of achieving the Millennium Development Goals and reducing inequality. The actions all contributed towards the Global Call to Action Against Poverty campaign (GCAP).
On Friday 17 October, the UN Eradication of Poverty Day, over 600 WaterAid staff, members and partners in four countries, joined others across the world by taking part in the global Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty. WaterAid's contribution to the Stand Up mass mobilisation, the 'WaterAid wave' (a version of the Mexican wave!), contributed to the successful attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest number of people standing at one time.
WaterAid's wave was sent across three continents with WaterAid offices in the UK, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Bangladesh all organising events in support of Stand Up. A huge number of the people around the world who stood up will be struggling to live without access to safe water and sanitation. WaterAid stood with them in solidarity and helped to send a strong message to Governments in both developed and developing countries.
"I am really glad that WaterAid staff throughout the organisation joined millions of people around the world that refused to stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and broken promises. Events like these are a great reminder that all have the power to change things through simple but effective actions." Barbara Frost, WaterAid's Chief Executive
