Help WaterAid in your Community

Rotary, WaterAid and schools

Rotary clubs have such solid foundations in the local community and many links with schools. We could work very effectively together to help spread awareness of WaterAid, Rotary and our partnership throughout schools in your area.

At WaterAid we are committed to working with schools in the UK, helping them educate their pupils about the world water crisis and in return many of them choose to fundraise and campaign for us. With 4,000 children dying every day from diseases caused by a lack of safe water and sanitation, it is important that young people in the UK understand these issues but also that they feel able to make a difference.

We do this by providing exceptional educational resources which help children understand the problems and the solutions and also support teachers to address required areas of the academic curriculum. To see some of our free educational resources click here. We also arrange for trained volunteer speakers to give talks to school children to bring our work to life. But we can do even more if we work together!

So what are we asking you to do?

We would be very grateful if your club members could approach any local schools or colleges you have existing links with before the end of term to arrange a talk about WaterAid for the start of the new term. If you could then let us know of the schools who are interested, we will arrange a speaker for September/October. The aim is to encourage as many schools as possible to choose WaterAid as their charity of the year for the academic year 2011/12. The majority of schools that support us in this way raise around £500 – and many raise much more. By influencing a school to choose WaterAid as their charity of the year you will be directly helping us to raise funds which will have a real impact on the lives of some of the world's poorest people.

If each club in RIBI found just 1 school to support in this way, this initiative could raise £925,000, which could provide a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene to 62,000 people!

If a school is unable to support in this way, we also have schools appeals that they can get involved in our latest autumn appeal Buckets of Pennies for Buckets of Water.

If you are trained as a WaterAid speaker, you can of course do the talk yourself but if you are unable to do this we can find another speaker in your area. If this is something you would be interested in getting involved with, please let us know by emailing rotary@wateraid.org. We can provide resources and support to help you encourage schools to support WaterAid and importantly to highlight the achievements of RIBI. Many thanks again for all your support. It is greatly appreciated.
