Across the world 1 in 8 people do not have access to safe water and over 2.5 billion do not have access to a toilet. This crisis means 5,000 children die every day from preventable water related diseases.
The problem can seem insurmountable but the solutions do not have to cost the earth.
WaterAid can enable someone to gain access to a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education for just £15. Join Soroptimists International Clubs from across Great Britain and Ireland and say no to the injustices of water poverty.
I am looking forward to the day when we have our own latrine. It is difficult for women now.
Your club can support some of the poorest people in the world by raising money for WaterAid through a Wine into water event.
Your donations will fund special WaterAid projects in Nigeria – where 34% live below the poverty line and infant mortality is nearly 200 out of every 1,000. Safe water and adequate sanitation does more than just improve health – it impacts on education, gender equality, economic development and many other factors.
Jannuta Buniya, a 30-year-old mother of four from Jingawa state in Nigeria explains:
"I am looking forward to the day when we have our own latrine. It is difficult for women now. During the day we must walk so far into the bush if we do not want to be seen. At night there is a danger from snakes and scorpions. Sometimes the men follow us and that also makes us afraid."
Why not hold your event to mark United Nations World Water Day on 22 March 2008? Our wine into water fundraising pack is absolutely free and contains everything you need to hold a successful evening.
