Walk for Water
Alahede Dura, 18, from Ghana
Before her community installed a safe water point Alahede used to walk for five hours to collect unsafe water:
"Before the pump was here, I fetched water from the riverside. It was dirty and made us feel sick. I have much more time now. We use that time to weave hats, and then we sell them at Bolgatanga market."
Many women and children across the world spend up to six hours a day walking for water, leaving them little time to do anything else – be it working or going to school. They remain unable to take the essential steps out of poverty.
Tragically, their time and effort goes on collecting water that is often dirty and unsafe, leading to diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery and cholera which cause the deaths of about 4,000 children every day.
You can help change this situation by organising your own sponsored Walk for Water.
Get your school or group involved and get sponsored to walk a certain distance - with every step you would be bringing clean water, sanitation and hygiene education closer to the world's poorest people. Millions of people are forced to walk for water every day – but your walk can help them!
Currently one in eight people worldwide do not have access to clean water, and 2.5 billion lack adequate sanitation. Although WaterAid has changed the lives of over 11 million people like Alahede, we want to do more so need your help!
