Sing for Water is all about people creating events under their own banner and in their own way. Anyone who enjoys singing can take part.
Large and small groups of singers have raised money in many different ways including a concert on a pier, 'Sing & Swim' in an outdoor pool, performing at local festivals and as part of mass choir events in London, Bristol, Newcastle Gateshead, Leicester and the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Events have also taken place in Germany and France.
Every September hundreds of people take part in the original Sing for Water event – a mass choirs performance at the Mayors' Thames Festival in London. Throughout the year choirs organise other unique Sing for Water events around the country.
All the money raised goes directly to local projects in Africa and Asia, with the majority of funds being raised through sponsorship for taking part in a Sing for Water concert. Over the last 10 years £564,668 has been raised for projects in Burkina Faso, Malawi, Ghana, India and East Timor. This year funds raised by Sing for Water will support vital projects in Ghana and Malawi where life-saving work bringing access to safe water to many villages and thousands of people.
In 2002, the initial dream was to raise £1,000 through Sing for Water. There is a song which says 'many drops to turn a mill, singly none' and it is wonderful that so many choirs, festivals and individuals are now involved with Sing for Water. We are hoping that Sing for Water will continue to grow so that many more people can have access to safe water.
Every twenty seconds, somewhere in the world, a child dies because of preventable water borne diseases. By raising money through Sing for Water you can do something to help change that. – Helen Chadwick, Sing for Water founder
