Severn Trent
The Severn Trent Group of companies, employees, customers, business partners and community have raised over £590,000 for WaterAid. That's enough to provide a brighter future for some 40,000 people. Severn Trent is an important partner for WaterAid and provides substantial support in a variety of ways: employee volunteering, a £55,000 annual corporate donation, gifts in kind and engaging support from new sources. Severn Trent facilitates the involvement of suppliers, contractors and advisers in helping raise money for WaterAid. They enthusiastically support corporate fundraising events like the fly fishing and golf tournaments. Severn Trent Water has a dedicated volunteer committee and supporters across the group involved in fundraising and awareness-raising. The popular employee payroll lottery raises over £65,000 annually, and as regular giving, is vital for allowing WaterAid to plan projects in the medium term. Over 50 staff and retired employees are involved in organising a year round programme of events, such as the rugged Severn Trent Mountain Walk or Cycle Challenge, a 32 mile Peak District walk, fantasy football competitions and dress down days. There is also a network of 20 employee volunteers who raise awareness of WaterAid's work by giving presentations to groups in the local community, including Rotary, Inner Wheel, Lions and schools.
Severn Trent supports two country links, with Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. The funds raised can support local communities which are involved in planning, developing and implementing their own water and sanitation schemes. Successes over the last year include hygiene education for schools in 22 villages. Emily Latham, Severn Trent's WaterAid represenative, went on the 2008 supporters trip to Uganda: "We met a family who had had a latrine fitted which meant there was somewhere clean to go to the toilet and they could recycle their waste products. This man was so proud of the difference it has made to his life. His children are no longer ill, and because he can use this pesticide he is able to grow banana's, carrots, watermelons, yams and tomatoes. He showed us his crops and they were amazing."
