Northumbrian WaterNorthumbrian Water has been an active supporter of WaterAid since 1982. Customers, employees and suppliers have raised over £2 million for WaterAid since 1996. The annual customer appeal alone has raised over £78,883 since 2001.” In April 2006 a delegation from the North East visited WaterAid's work in Malawi to see how some of the money raised is spent. The group, consisting of Kevan Jones (MP for Durham, North), Northumbrian Water's Director of Corporate Affairs, Northumbrian Water's Media and Communications Manager and three local journalists. Together, they visited both communities who have benefited from WaterAid's work and those who still face the daily struggle of having to fetch and drink unsafe water. The group were impressed by WaterAid's work and how it works in collaboration with communities, partner organisations and local government. The group learned first hand the enormous impact safe water and sanitation can have. A series of short films on BBC Look North and a week of feature articles in the Newcastle Journal spread this message around the North East. Northumbrian Water has a very active regional committee of supporters and staff volunteers. The committee operates a monthly WaterAid lottery, organises major fundraising events and also helps build awareness in the community through slide shows and talks.
