Racing ducks for water

The Great British Duck Race

WaterAid has been chosen as one of the three lead charities for this year's Great British Duck Race!

The Great British Duck Race on 31 August 2008 is set to beat the duck-racing world record. This year 250,000 ducks will be released into the Thames, dwarfing last year's record-breaking race that saw 165,000 yellow plastic ducks swim down the river.

At 12:20pm on "Duck Day", the ducks will be dropped into Molesey Lock near Hampton Court. The race will begin at 1:30pm and will take around two hours. The ducks will be carried by the current to the finish line at Albany Reach, where the winning duck will be announced!

Adopt a duck

It is only £2 to adopt a duck - so why not come along to cheer on your duck and have a quacking good time! There will be entertainment, charity stands and refreshments served along the course near Hampton Court.

By adopting a duck, you will be help raise money for WaterAid's vital work enabling some of the world's poorest people to gain access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education

Adopt a WaterAid duck to race on Duck Day

We will also be selling our ducks at WaterAid events over the summer, where you'll receive a special souvenir duck or a duck badge!

If your company or school is interested in selling ducks on behalf of WaterAid, please contact WaterAid Events on 0845 6000 433 or email us at events@wateraid.org

The Duck Race is working in close partnership with the River Thames Alliance and the Environment Agency to ensure that every plastic duck is removed from the Thames on completion of the race and then recycled or reused.
