On Sunday 21st February, 6,000 runners braved wet and windy conditions to run 13.1 miles along the seafront in the 20th Sussex Beacon Half Marathon in Brighton.

106 of these keen athletes were running for WaterAid, 5 of which ran the race dressed in lovely foam toilet suits.  All together, our supporters raised over £25,000, which is absolutely great. That’s 833 toilets, 4167 taps or 34,722m of pipe!

As an official charity at the event, WaterAid had a strong presence, manning one of only two water points along the route with 20 die-hard WaterAid supporters who came out to support despite the horrible conditions.

The event went really well, and it was great to see so many people running in WaterAid running vests with smiles on their faces.

Dalilah Baruti, one of our runners said that "The atmosphere was absolutely amazing; it was unlike anything I’ve ever seen or been part of. The rain and hail made it feel a bit like I was running through purgatory though."

Avi Govind also seemed to enjoy himself, saying "Despite the wind and rain, I had a good run and somehow almost got a personal best time!  The refreshments you provided in the tent following the run were certainly very welcome. I found the organisation from the WaterAid side both before and during the race day to be professional and efficient."

Thanks to everyone for all your support especially the runners who have worked so hard in training and fundraising. You all did brilliantly!

WaterAid will also be taking part in the first Brighton Marathon on Sunday 18th April, so make sure you come down and show your support. Just drop us an email if you would like to volunteer.
