The generous crowd at Leicester's Riverside Festival donated more than £500 to support the work of WaterAid on Sunday afternoon as they were entertained by around 180 voices coming together to take part in Leicester's first Sing for Water event. Glorious sunshine brought out record numbers of people to enjoy the entertainment at the festival, organised by Leicester City Council.

The singers came from community and church choirs from around Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Melton and Coventry.

There were also around 50 individuals who had never sung in four-part harmony before. They were brought together by a small group of organisers who sing with Red Leicester Choir and the Leicester Amika Choir.

The singers also raised money for WaterAid through sponsorship and more than £1,500 was handed in on the day and more will be sent over the next few weeks.

"I am really proud of the people who took part in this event," said Kim Burley Jones, the chair of the organising group.

"We had loads of fun and we raised vital funds which will enable some of the world's poorest people to gain access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education."
