In 2005 WaterAid was once again a presence at the WOMAD festival in Reading. For the fifth year running, the weekend provided a wonderful opportunity to engage with the public and help spread WaterAid's messages of the need for clean water and effective sanitation for all.

Festival-goers were encouraged to find out more about our vital work in Africa and Asia at the WaterAid marquee, and to become actively involved with events and campaigns.

A team of fantastic volunteers were kept busy over the three-day event manning the stall and keeping the cleanest set of toilets on the site, much to the delight of festival-goers!

The festival loos once again provided the perfect opportunity for WaterAid to make the link between the need for good facilities at summer festivals in the UK and the lack of water and sanitation faced by those in the developing world. Volunteers also got stuck in providing clean drinking water and hand washing facilities to those attending the event, both of which proved very popular, especially when the weather turned very warm.

To much popular acclaim, the WaterAid poo made several appearances, and was even interviewed by a local radio station (as well as attracting a lot of attention, especially when salsa-dancing).

A total of over £8000 was raised, a great result which will help make a huge difference to the lives of people in the developing world, for whom lack of water and sanitation is an ongoing reality.

None of this would have been possible without the support of our team of dedicated volunteers, and we are very grateful for their help. We hope to see many of them again next year. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support and enthusiasm of the WOMAD festival organisers.
