What you will get as part of our team

The WaterAid team includes those with WaterAid places and those with their own places who wish to raise money for WaterAid. In return for your dedication and commitment, WaterAid will be there to support you every step of the way providing:

  • An online sponsorship page
  • A WaterAid running vest
  • An information pack with fundraising support material
  • Regular Great North Run team newsletters including tips on training and fundraising advice
  • The opportunity to run in the celebrated WaterAid toilet costume, or a bucket hat
  • An invitation to a reception hosted by WaterAid's corporate partner Northumbrian Water, held just beyond the finish line. Here runners can relax and catch up with friends, family and other members of the team.

The 2009 event

See pictures from the day on Flickr here (link opens in new window).

Sunday 20 September saw a bright morning and dry weather over Newcastle and South Shields – it was the day of the world’s biggest half marathon, the 2009 Great North Run!

115 WaterAid runners took their places on the starting line; including 'Pantsman' (aka Philip Taylor), Dennis the Menace (Gareth Boyd) and some toilets and bucket hats (that had sprouted legs…!)

They were cheered along the way and across the finish line by the fantastic crowds that line the route. Some also made it into the charity village and the WaterAid tent for refreshments.

Congratulations to our top runners (of those times that we know).

  • In the men’s group, they were:

Alun Hindle (01:35:18)
Heraldo Biasi (01:43:42)
Andrew Horne (01:43:51)

  • In the women’s:

Megan Rosser (01:55:30)
Caroline Brindle (01:56:23)
Katherine Hooper (02:02:47)

Congratulations and thank you to every runner. Many people walk miles each day just to collect water, dramatically affecting their quality of life. Every step of this 13.1 mile course that raises money for WaterAid enables us to reach some of these people.
