If you fancy participating in an organised race and want to raise funds for WaterAid you can see a comprehensive calendar of forthcoming running events in the UK on the Runners world website or the Running bug website. Most cities in the UK have their own marathons and half marathons, so why not try your local one?

The Edinburgh Marathon takes place on Sunday 31 May. Around 16,500 runners will take part in what Runners World magazine calls the fastest marathon in the UK. The course is mostly downhill – with an overall elevation drop of about 50 metres – so it's a good idea for those looking for a personal best!

The Bath Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 15 March 2009, and entry is now open. The race course is flat and ideal for both beginners and more advanced runners wanting to beat their personal best. There is also a family fun day on Saturday 14 March. You can apply to enter here

Overseas marathons

There are many exciting running events happening overseas, which could provide an adventurous alternative.

2:09 Events offers several overseas challenges, and here are some examples of the marathons you can apply for:

The Stockholm Marathon, on 30 May 2009, is ranked as the No. 1 destination marathon in the world by "The Ultimate Guide to International Marathons". It is also one of the original European marathons.

The Madrid Marathon is on the same day as the London Marathon, 26 April 2009, and as such is an ideal alternative. Madrid is the highest capital city in Europe, which might affect your time.

The Great Wall Marathon in China takes place on the 16 April 2009. It includes 7km of the wall itself and the rest of the run takes in some of the region's mountain scenery. A half marathon is also available. The high temperatures combined with the testing route make this a more demanding marathon than most – most runners finish an hour slower than their usual times. This is an opportunity for a challenging and exciting alternative to a city marathon.

There are also many overseas challenge opportunities available through www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk, and other event companies. Most major cities have a marathon, so it's really a case of where you want to go!

Whatever type of running event you decide to take part in, please complete this questionnaire so that we can assist your fundraising in the best possible way.
