The Great North Run 2011
Sunday 18 September 18 2011 saw a bright day with a short but heavy rain shower - some would say ideal running conditions for the 2011 BUPA Great North Run. World 5000m champion Mo Farah started this year's run, high fiving a number of WaterAid runners as they passed.
We were delighted to have 93 runners taking part on behalf of WaterAid - including 2 in tap costumes, 1 toilet suit and a bucket hat! Hopefully their supporters will have spotted them on the BBC amongst the other 54,000 people taking part.
Have a look at some photos from the day on our Flickr site.
Of course the objective of the day was not just to have a good time, but also to help WaterAid raise valuable funds to enable some of the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. These basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods and form the first essential step in overcoming poverty.
Congratulations to our top runners!
For the men, Darren McAvoy of Azzurri Communications completed the run in 01:28:25 and for the women, Harriet Ridley a post graduate student at Durham University completed in 01:36:15 – a big well done to you both!
Special mention has to go to Robert Godlonton who completed the run in 02:27:49 whilst pushing Mary in her wheelchair and dressed as a toilet!
